This residential smart home rack was built for a client who wanted everything consolidated, organized, and designed to run reliably without constant intervention. The rack lives in a closet — out of sight, climate-managed through the cabinet's built-in ventilation, and accessible when needed.
The stack includes a Ubiquiti switch and access points for whole-home Wi-Fi coverage, with Cat6 homerun runs to every bedroom terminated at a patch panel in the rack. Security cameras feed into a dedicated NVR for local recording. A Crown amplifier and Sonos ports handle distributed audio throughout the house. Starlink provides the primary internet connection, routed through the Ubiquiti system for managed traffic and guest network separation.
A CyberPower UPS at the bottom of the rack keeps the networking and security systems online during power outages — the internet and cameras stay up even when the grid goes down, which is the point of having a battery backup integrated at the rack level rather than just at the panel.
Every device in the rack is labeled. Cable runs are dressed and routed cleanly through the rear so the front presents organized and readable. The display at the top monitors rack conditions in real time.
Smart home and low-voltage work like this is increasingly a part of what a modern electrical contractor does. If you're building or remodeling and want structured wiring done right the first time — not retrofitted later — this is the kind of install that makes everything else easier.
