This Fremont install paired a Tesla Powerwall 3 with a dedicated solar rapid shutdown system — the Powerwall 3 handles battery storage and grid backup, while the Eaton rapid shutdown switch meets NEC 2017/2020 requirements for solar PV systems that need to de-energize the roof-mounted array quickly in an emergency.
The Powerwall 3 is Tesla's latest generation all-in-one unit — the inverter, battery, and gateway are integrated into a single enclosure, which simplifies the installation compared to earlier Powerwalls that required a separate gateway. Two conduit runs come into the top of the unit through the mounting bracket: one carrying the solar DC conductors from the roof array, and one carrying the AC service connection.
Inside the unit, the gateway module sits in the center, flanked by the DC bus terminals on the right — the gold-colored block where the solar string conductors land. The AC terminations are on the left side. Everything is routed cleanly with no conductor crossover, and all terminations were torqued to Tesla's specified values before the cover was closed.
The rapid shutdown switch on the adjacent wall is the code-required emergency stop for the solar array. When triggered, it de-energizes the conductors on the roof within seconds — a requirement for fire department access on any residential solar installation. The Eaton unit is labeled and mounted where it's visible and accessible from grade.
Powerwall 3 installations require a Tesla-certified installer and coordination with the utility for interconnection. This system was installed to permit specifications and commissioned through the Tesla app before handoff.
