This Stockton job was a full panel replacement that addressed two problems at once: getting rid of a Zinsco and cleaning up a decade of flex conduit entries that had accumulated at the bottom of the old enclosure.

The before photo shows what the original installation looked like — the Zinsco panel open with multiple flexible conduit connectors hanging from the bottom. Flex is fine for short equipment connections, but using it as a primary conduit entry on a main panel is a shortcut. It's not as secure as rigid conduit, it's harder to seal against water intrusion, and it looks like what it is: improvised. All of those entrances were removed and replaced with proper conduit entries on the new panel.

The new panel is a full 200A install with every circuit properly identified. Reading the directory: Generator, Tesla Charger, Garage, A/C, Living Room Plugs, Dining Room Plugs, Outdoor GFI, Kitchen, Bathroom Plugs, Surge Protector, Bedroom Plugs, Bonus Room Lights & Plugs, Water Heater, Lights, Oven, Pool, and Dryer. Every circuit has a breaker, every breaker has a label.

The generator interlock kit is a mechanical device that prevents the main breaker and the generator breaker from being on at the same time. That's the critical safety requirement for generator hookups — you cannot back-feed the utility grid, and an interlock makes it physically impossible to do so. When utility power is out, you slide the interlock to block the main breaker, then switch on the generator breaker. When utility power returns, you reverse it. No transfer switch required, no complicated wiring.

The generator inlet box on the exterior wall is a NEMA L14-30 twist-lock receptacle — the standard for portable generator connections. The homeowner plugs a generator cord from their generator directly into this inlet, and the power routes through the panel via the generator breaker. The inlet is weatherproof and mounted at a practical height for connection. Job was permitted through the City of Stockton and signed off by the inspector.
