Agricultural Electrical in the Central Valley: Transformers, Well Pumps, and What Makes This Work Different

Agricultural electrical work operates at different voltages, distances, and conditions than residential work. Here's what a 10kVA transformer install and a full horse stable LED upgrade actually involved.

Most electrical contractors work primarily on residential homes and light commercial. Agricultural electrical is a different category — heavier equipment, higher voltages, longer distances, and conditions that assume the wiring will run continuously through heat, dust, and weather.

We work across the Central Valley and San Joaquin region on agricultural and commercial electrical. Here's what two real jobs looked like.

    10kVA Transformer — Well Pump Step-Down, 300-Foot Run

This job required stepping down 3-phase 480V utility power to single-phase 240V for a well pump located 300 feet from the power source. That combination — voltage conversion and long distance — means the design starts with the transformer, not the wire run.

The transformer is a 10kVA Hevi-Duty single-phase unit tapped to convert 480V primary to 240V secondary, mounted on a Unistrut pole structure. On the primary side is a Siemens heavy-duty AC disconnect. On the secondary side is a 30-amp Siemens enclosed safety switch, clearly labeled for the well pump circuit. A solar circuit enclosure is also part of the assembly — this site has additional renewable integration.

The 300-foot run to the pump required conduit across open agricultural land, terminated at a separate disconnect post adjacent to the concrete water storage tank. The pump disconnect at the field end is the local lockout point for anyone servicing the pump — required by code for equipment at that distance from the source.

Agricultural and commercial transformer work is a different category than residential. The equipment is heavier, the voltages are higher, and the consequences of an incorrect installation are serious. Every tap, termination, and overcurrent device was sized to the transformer's nameplate and the pump's load requirements.

Horse Stable LED Lighting — Full Structure

The LED install at an open-sided horse stable was a different kind of agricultural job — no transformers, no 480V, but a full wiring scope from scratch across a metal-framed structure with zero existing electrical infrastructure.

The challenge on agricultural buildings like this is that there's nothing to work from. No interior panels, no existing conduit, no outlet boxes. All wiring runs from the source, through weatherproof conduit rated for the outdoor agricultural environment, to fixtures mounted on the metal roof framing.

The fixtures were positioned to give even coverage across the full length of the stalls without dead zones at the open ends. The result visible from the exterior — a warm LED line running under the eave — is the marker of a structure that's now usable after dark. That matters on a working property.

    What Agricultural Electrical Work Requires

Longer distances mean voltage drop calculations matter. Higher voltages mean different safety protocols. Outdoor environments mean weatherproofing everything. And the loads are often continuous — well pumps, ventilation fans, and barn lighting that run for hours at a time.

Most residential contractors won't take agricultural or commercial electrical. It's not that the work is impossible — it's that the planning, equipment sizing, and inspection requirements are different enough that experience matters. If you have a property in the Central Valley with agricultural electrical needs — a well pump, barn, outbuilding, or rural panel — we handle this work regularly.
