EV Charger Installation in Modesto: What to Expect, What It Costs, and What to Ask

Adding a Level 2 charger at home is one of the most practical upgrades an EV owner can make. Here's what the installation actually involves, what drives the cost, and how to get it done right.

Adding a Level 2 charger at home is one of the most practical upgrades an EV owner can make. Charging overnight on a dedicated 240V circuit instead of a standard 120V outlet means waking up to a full battery every day regardless of how much driving you did.

The job is straightforward for most homes, but there are enough variables that it's worth understanding what goes into it before you call.

Level 1 vs. Level 2 — What's the Actual Difference

A Level 1 charger is the mobile connector that comes with most electric vehicles. It plugs into a standard 120V household outlet and delivers roughly 3–5 miles of range per hour of charging. For a 200-mile battery, a full charge from empty takes 40+ hours. It works, but it's slow enough that most EV owners run into range issues within the first few weeks.

A Level 2 charger runs on 240V — the same voltage as a clothes dryer or electric range. Depending on the circuit amperage and the vehicle's onboard charger, you get 20–44 miles of range per hour. A full charge from empty typically takes 6–12 hours. For most people, that means plugging in at night and having a full battery in the morning.

    What the Installation Involves

The core of an EV charger install is a dedicated 240V circuit from the panel to the charger location. That means a new two-pole breaker in the panel, appropriately sized wire run to the garage or carport, and the charger mounted at a height where the cable easily reaches the vehicle's charge port.

Where the wire runs — through the wall, in conduit on the surface, or under the floor — depends on the home's layout and the distance from the panel to the charger. Most garage installs are straightforward because the panel is often in or near the garage. Longer runs or installations in detached structures cost more because there's more material and labor involved.

Tesla Wall Connectors and most other Level 2 chargers are hard-wired, meaning there's no plug — the charger is wired directly to the circuit. The circuit is typically configured for 60A (48A continuous), which is the maximum most home chargers can use.

    What Drives the Cost

The biggest variable is the distance from the panel to the charger. A 10-foot run in a garage where the panel is on the adjacent wall is a half-day job. A 60-foot run through finished walls, up through the attic, and back down to a charger on the far side of the garage takes significantly longer and requires more material.

Secondary variables: whether conduit is required (exposed wiring in a garage needs to be in conduit), whether the panel has space for a new two-pole breaker, and whether any existing wiring needs to be moved to make room.

In the Modesto area, most straightforward garage installations fall in the range that makes financial sense well before the fuel savings add up — especially with PG&E's EV charging rates.

    Permits

EV charger installations in California require a permit in most jurisdictions. That's not a negative — the permit process ensures the work is inspected and meets code, which matters for insurance purposes and for future buyers if you sell the home. We handle the permit process as part of the job.

    Tesla-Specific Notes

Tesla Wall Connectors are set up through the Tesla app after installation. The charger connects to your home WiFi and integrates with the vehicle for scheduling and monitoring. If you have two Teslas, two Wall Connectors can be linked in a power-sharing configuration — one circuit, two chargers, the system automatically balances the load.

If you're buying a Tesla and haven't had a charger installed yet, scheduling the installation before the car arrives is worth doing. The mobile connector works in a pinch, but most owners want the Wall Connector from day one.
